The Northern Quarter represents the most recent area to be regenerated, although the process has been under way for some time now. Much of N/4 as its known is in the garment district. Manchester of course was built on cotton, the Lancashire textile mills produced some of the finest materials in the world in their hey day and there are still a number of wholesale outlets actively trading within the Quarter. Sadly, global markets meant that cheaper material could be easily sourced from the Far East and most of the mills are long gone, as working premises, though a few of the buildings still survive.
Mostly though now there are a number of apartments blocks, some new build, some refurbished mills or warehouses. It has a definite bohemian feel to it and is well loved by those of that ilk. Restaurants and bars seem to open on a monthly basis, usually to a very high standard.
There’s more to come but here are the first photos.
