I mentioned earlier that, although the Duomo pulls them in, there is far more for the tourists to enjoy at Santo Croce. Just a short walk from the hustle of the Duomo area, brings you into a square dominated by a huge marble facade. This in itself is a little odd if you know the building as a whole, since the facade is somewhat ‘oversize’ for the building behind and the remainder of the building, normally invisible,is built of more mundane brick.
Nevertheless, this is where the great and the good of Florence are (mostly) interred and their funerary monuments form a fascinating display within the church interior.
Michelangelo, Galileo, Machiavelli, Rossini, Dante (actually buried in Ravenna). Each one vies for the attention with their ornate figures and equally ornate decoration.
