2014, Newcastle, The Angel of the North

The Angel of the North is a piece of art located just off the main road to Newcastle. As a statue, its arguably one of the most impressive in the World.  Standing some 70 metres tall and with a wing span the size of a jumbo jet, it dominates the skyline for miles around. Created by Anthony Gormley, it showcases the artists consummate skill in displaying the human form with so few lines.  It is supported by piles the same depth as its height, to withstand winds of up to 100mph.

It is said that is viewed by hundreds of people very minute; whether that includes actual visitors or on-line images, I’m not sure. It is also cited as the most popular ‘angel’ image in the World.

For us, when we visited Newcastle, it provided a show stopping bookend to our visit – we stopped off both on the way up and on the way home.
